Song of the Day: Al Green - Love Is A Beautiful Thing
There are some songs you could call stealth hits. They never chart, but they get used in movies, movie trailers and commercials to the point that they achieve the kind of familiarity that we associate with a true classic. And that brings us to Love Is A Beautiful Thing, which is a classic, and one you've probably heard in movies, commercials, and so on. It's a never-was-that-should have been, another sermon from the very Reverend Al on the power of love. Only, he didn't write it. Someone with the name Seth Swirsky did. Don't know nothin' about Seth, but he clearly wore out a few Al albums to judge by the sound and feel here. Call it retro contemporary, in a similar vein to Primal Scream's Come Together. Except this one has Al Green, and though it came out nearly two decades after his last sizable pop hits, his voice shows no sign of wear. If anything, the vocal acrobatics toward the end sound even more elastic than those on any of his classic hits. They defy logic, nearly rise above the ability of the human ear to hear. Just as he says at the outset, this is what he believes. He may even make you a believer as well. And he winds it all up with a K-Tel style rundown of some of his biggest hits, lest you forget his other testaments to the power of love. Call him. Operators are standing by...
